Switzerland is moving forward with underground tunnels to move cargo autonomously.

I like this tech, it will free up a lot of the surface. It may even work in the U.S. inside of cities. Might be a bit much between cities for the near term.
And naturally once the machine intelligence takes over and puts most of us into the Matrix, the rest of have a place to hide Neo.
