Terry Byland has bionic implants in both eyes. It is not a substitute for sight, it provides on very crude images. But it is massively better than nothing. It allows him to live close to a normal life.
But he and 350 other patients that have been using this technology as early as 2004 will not be getting their upgrades. The company that produces them is under new management, having almost dipped into bankruptcy.
I never realized that this technology was this far along. This is a story with a unique perspective on a rare and wonderful technology.
