When it comes to creative excuses for dodging taxes, two Australian missionaries have taken the divine route to financial freedom. Fanny Alida Beerepoot and her brother Rembertus Cornelis Beerepoot recently found themselves in a heavenly predicament, facing a bill of over AUD$2 million from the Australian Taxation Office. Their reason for not paying income tax? Well, it turns out, Australian taxation law didn’t quite align with the law of the Almighty, leaving the tax office and the Supreme Court of Tasmania baffled and amused in equal measure. Meet the Beerepoots, whose celestial conviction led them to proclaim, “Thou shall not pay tax” according to the divine tax code.
