After several movies from Hollywood that depict the Earth in danger of being destroyed by an asteroid, and some reputable science say that is could possibly maybe happen, NASA is developing the technology to deflect an asteroid.
The project is called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). It will send a spacecraft to collide with an asteroid called Dimorphos (which revolves around another asteroid called Didymos) at 15000 miles per hour. Dimorphos is about 525 feet in diameter. The goal is to deflect it enough to change its orbit.
Just so you are not scared, none of the asteroids in the test are on a path where they could hit earth.
This will all take place next month. The European Space Agency will send a vehicle to the asteroids to see the results in about 4 years.
I’m just glad to know that we are taking science fiction seriously. I do not want to be extinct…
