For those of you who know physics and science fiction, you know that a Dyson sphere is is a shell that completely encloses a sun, and utilizes all of the radiated power. A version of this was featured in the book “Ringword” by Niven and Pournelle. Great book!
Some say that it would help us “live forever.” But they are talking about our “digitial consciousness” not our biological ones. To me, its not real, so I’m not going to worry about it. I’ll work on keeping my biological ass alive.
But the new thought is to build part of a Dyson’s Sphere with a satellite swarm.
“Unlike a shell-like Dyson sphere, a Dyson swarm would be composed of living habitats, satellites, and solar energy collectors orbiting like a net around a star. Energy would be transferred wirelessly between the individual components and Earth. Alternatively, millions of mirrors could be used to focus light onto a fewer number of collectors.”
I love this idea. It is entirely feasible once we develop the infrastructure. But that is a heck of a lot of infrastructure to build.
