A school is using facial recognition to monitor children to make sure they are paying attention to their lessons.
Never mind that a decent teacher should know the reactions of her students. But to have a machine prod you to pay attention brings to mind horrible images of torture devices that keep you awake until you pass out.
And teaching children that they are always watched and had better not relax for a second is a totalitarian despot’s dream. Sure, condition any expectation of privacy out of them. Then they won’t want those pesky freedoms that get in the way of an efficient society…
But this is where China is headed.
