Thomas Edison started working on it in 1901. The first hybrid car was a Porsche in 1901. The Model T became a force in 1908. Electric vehicles lost popularity in the 1930’s then emerged again as the crappiest vehicles in history in the 1970’s
Elon Musk and Tesla made them cool again.
