This was actually fairly common on the dairy farm where I grew up. We had a different mechanism for helping calves be born, but the function was the same. And yes, cows give birth standing up, most of the time, unless there is a problem.
Sometimes, though, the calf is in breech. I’ve seen my cousins reach inside the cow and turn a calf around.
Some people say that birth is beautiful. Sorry folks, I’m not squeamish and I’ll help when I need to, but beautiful, it ain’t.
